June 16 2007 Telus Toronto Dragon Boat Festival Kicks off Summer

The Chinese saying goes ‘never tuck away your coats and jackets until after the Dragon Boat Race Festival. Other traditions include eating sticky rice dumpling and soaking in dragon boat water for good health and luck during the festival to celebrate the formal arrival of summer in Chinese tradition.

At the festival opening ceremony for the 19th TELUS Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, held at the Toronto Centre Island, more than 50 government dignitaries and special guests joined to kick off the Dragon Boat Race Festival. The Festival has become Toronto traditional summer event that brings people from diverse ethnic backgrounds to celebrate the ancient Chinese culture of dragon boat racing.

“Toronto Chinese Business Association has long been a driving force to build Toronto's economy in every possible way. This Festival is one of our efforts and contributions to promote our tourism and economy,” says Mr. Ralph Hui, president of TCBA. Over two million people, from local communities, cities across Canada and the United States, and around the world have come to enjoy this unique and cross-cultural Festival since 1989.

Xinhua news in China reported: A special “Hong Kong 10th Anniversary Cup” Race, introduced in this year's Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, has reflected the well-respected “Hong Kong Spirit,” said Bassanio So, the director of the Economic and Trade Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Canada.
