September 8, 2008: Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, Biggest Ever!

The New York Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, held August 2-3 at Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows corona Park was the biggest ever. More than 60,000 people attended and $10,000 in prizes was awarded. Additionally over $10,000 was raised for local charities.

At the 18th annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, 150 teams and 1800 competitors participated in fine weather marred by only a little light rain. Montral Mix was the overall winner. Race results can be seen online at www.hkdbf-ny.org. Highlights included:

  • 5th annual Chef Ine dumpling eating contest. The winner ate 66 dumplings in two minutes to win the $1000.00 prize. (see www.chefonecorp.com for info)
  • Awards ceremony/team dinner held with 500 in attendance
  • First ever Metro Asian food magazine media challenge cup race run. Plans are in the works to expand this race for next year.
  • Chef One named sponsor of the year
  • Dragonfly's named team of the year
  • Metlife won the t-shirt contest
  • dock master Mike Lau acknowledged for 15 years of service

NYC parks reports that the boathouse and dock at Meadow Lake will undergo major renovation.

A colorful hong kong tradition continued in New York - the 18th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, the oldest, largest, most traditional dragon boat festival in the US - with the largest number of local teams ever entered: 150+ teams competed. In Celebration of the "Year of the RAT," the organizing committee of the 18th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York (HKDBF -NY) announced that this years' competition, held this Saturday, August 2nd & Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 featured cash and prizes for competitors in the US Dragon Boat Open Championship. The Festival was held at Meadow Lake, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York.

HKDBF-NY , a multicultural celebration and sporting event, is the largest multi-cultural Festival in New York and the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. HKDBF NY keeps up the age old tradition of Dragon Boat Racing in colorful, custom made teak boats, virtual works of art gliding on the water. For eighteen successful years HKDBF-NY has attracted a diverse, multi-cultural audience of more than 50,000 attendees from throughout North America. With more than 15 0 well-trained teams, involving more than 1,500 participants competing from across the U.S. and Canada, this year's festival is expected to be notable for both its scale and fierce competition.
