May 17, 2010, Great Weather for a Great Dragon Boat Festival in Washington DC

May 15 and 16

The weather cooperated completely for the 2010 Washington DC Dragon Boat Festival held on May 15 and 16 at the Thompson Boat House. Temperatures in the low 70s, blue skies and a moderately strong breeze made for a great day of paddling on the Potomac.

The event unfolded as usual. The main activity grounds were packed with canopies and paddlers who had a great view of the races. The course ran from the Kennedy Center in the direction of the Thompson Boat House. Early in the morning, the festival flags were seen at the boat house and dragon heads were set out for curious onlookers.

The festival organizers and many of the teams show connections to Taiwan. The Ambassador of the Republic of China in Washington offers a welcoming speech and the Republic of China sponsors the festival. This year, Ambassador Jason Yuan was on hand for the festival start.

The races, are, of course the main point of the festival, and they came off right in order. Teams of youth and teams of adults, mixed teams and women's were to be seen in their respective heats.

The festival could not be conducted without the participation of Washington DC safety officers, including emergency services and police. Both the park service and the DC police helped make the festival a success. We are grateful for their role
