May 20, 2007 DC Dragon Boat Festival a Great Success

The 2007 Washington DC Dragon Boat Festival was held May 19 and 20 at Thompson's Boat House. The weather was the best of any of the three DC festivals we have attended. Local and visiting teams and spectators were all having a great time. The festival featured not only the races, but cultural activities (including Chinese calligraphy).

After some early races, the opening ceremonies celebrated and honored the teams of racers, the traditions of Dragon Boat racing and the local sponsors of the festival. The lion dance was energizing and the speakers paid tribute to the spirit of the race.

Dr Joseph Wu, Ambassador of Taiwan to the US

Dr Joseph Wu, Taiwan's ambassador to the United States, noted that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office is pleased and proud to have been supporters of the festival for all six years. He indicated that the Republic of China supports the opportunities for Americans to learn more about Chinese culture through events such as the Dragon Boat Festival in Washington, and he expressed the hope the festival will continue to grow in size, talent and enthusiasm year after year. He also indicated that Taiwan intends to continue its involvement with this festival and hopes to increase that level of support.
